Like You Do

A poem.

To Juan

I wish I could let you look into my heart,
So that you could feel what I feel,
When you smile at me – like you do.
So that just for a moment,
You could feel the overwhelming love I feel,
When you smile at me – like you do.

I wish you could inhabit my body,
So that you could feel what I feel,
When you kiss me – the way you do.
So that just for a second,
You could feel the intoxicating passion I feel,
When you kiss me – like you do.

I wish you could wear my skin,
So that you could feel what I feel,
When you hold me – like you do.
So that just for an instant,
You could feel the all-encompassing comfort and trust I feel,
When you hold me – like you do.

But I don’t need to let you inside my heart,
You don’t need to inhabit my body,
There’s no reason for you to wear my skin.
Because I can see my love for you,
Reflected in your eyes,
Every time,
You look at me – like you do.
